Success Story
Background
Client A, a multiparous individual in her late pregnancy, contacted United & Guided at 39 weeks gestation with a request for immediate doula support. Although she had stable housing, consistent employment, and more than three years of maintained sobriety, she held significant anxiety related to prior child welfare involvement. Client A expressed deep concern that historical interactions with child protective systems might result in the removal of her newborn, despite having no open cases or current risk factors.
Client A reported being fully prepared with baby supplies and basic postpartum necessities. Her primary need was reassurance, guidance, and emotional support, not material assistance. Due to the proximity of her expected due date, the situation required rapid coordination and accelerated engagement.
Intervention
The United & Guided co-ed doula team initiated contact within 24 hours of referral. The team scheduled a virtual session to complete a comprehensive birth plan, conduct the required five pre-birth assessments, and complete a health benefits review (HBR). Despite experiencing active pregnancy discomfort and intermittent pain during the assessment process, Client A remained engaged and motivated. The doula team offered real-time coping strategies and trauma-informed communication, ensuring Client A felt supported and not rushed through the procedures.
A personalized birth plan was completed the same day and forwarded to the delivering hospital. The client was also screened and referred for Enhanced Care Management (ECM) to ensure continuity of care and equitable perinatal support.
Throughout labor, the doula team provided continual remote communication, including reassurance about the absence of any current child welfare involvement. The team emphasized Client A’s strengths—her stability, preparation, and proactive self-advocacy—while reinforcing her legal and medical understanding of the delivery process.
Delivery & Postpartum Support
Client A’s scheduled induction was unsuccessful, leading the clinical team to recommend a surgical delivery. Because of prior education and preparation during care planning, the client understood the procedure, associated timelines, and postoperative expectations, which reduced anxiety and supported informed consent.
Within approximately one hour after the birth of Baby I, the doula team conducted an in-hospital postpartum visit. Client A expressed relief, gratitude, and a renewed sense of confidence. She identified the team’s presence as emotionally grounding, noting that she had delivered without a partner present. The doula team's visit created a supportive, family-like environment during a vulnerable moment.
The team observed attentive bonding behaviors, appropriate infant care practices, and a safe postpartum environment. Client A demonstrated strong self-efficacy and readiness for newborn care.
Conclusion
United & Guided’s rapid engagement, trauma-informed approach, and coordinated doula support allowed Client A to navigate a condensed pre-birth timeline with confidence and clarity. The team’s planning and compassionate communication helped her complete all assessments, build strong rapport, and enter her planned C-section feeling informed and emotionally supported. With a safe delivery, no child-welfare concerns, and an Enhanced Care Management referral in place, Client A ultimately reported feeling respected, reassured, and well-guided through her birth and postpartum transition.
